AbstractCampos de coeficientes de correlação entre importantes parâmetros meteorológicos e um índice de chuva (IC) são apresentados, sazonalmente e para até cinco dias antes da ocorrência da chuva. Este índice de chuva indica a intensidade e a abrangência espacial das chuvas intensas ocorridas na Região Sul do Brasil. A influência dos máximos de vento meridional no IC, como vista pelo coeficiente de -0,6, foi o mais significante na véspera do evento. O cavado em 500 hPa correlacionou com a chuva intensa com valores tão altos quanto 0,5, durante os 4 dias que antecederam o evento. Outros parâmetros como pressão em superfície e advecção térmica apresentaram significantes correlações com o IC na véspera do evento de chuva intensa. Estes resultados são de grande valor para o aperfeiçoamento das previsões de chuvas intensas na Região Sul do Brasil. ABSTRACT: Fields of correlation coefficients between important meteorological parameters and a rainfall index (IC) are presented, season by season, and up to five days before the intense rainfall events. This rainfall index indicates the intensity and area coverage of heavy rainfall in Southeast Region of Brazil. The influence of the meridional wind maximum on the rainfall index, as seen by the correlation coefficient of -0.6, was the most significant on the day just before the event. The 500-hPa trough correlates with the heavy rainfall with values as high as -0.5 during the 4 days prior to the event. Other parameters such as surface pressure and thermal advection presented significant correlation with rainfall index in the day prior the event. These results are of great value for improving the forecast skill of heavy rainfall in South Region of Brazil.
